Let’s Talk Frizz, Because We’re All Fighting It

Every week someone sits in my chair and sighs, “Danielle, my hair is just… frizz.” And honestly, I get it. You can do everything right, spend a full hour getting ready, and still look like you stuck your finger in an outlet the minute you step outside. It’s the combo of our hot, dry air and random humidity that sneaks in here in Chino. It’s not you. It’s the weather and your hair just reacting to it.

One of my regulars, she parks across from the Chino Branch Library, came in last Thursday almost teary-eyed. She said, “I gave up. I don’t even bother styling it anymore.” Five minutes later, we’re laughing because it wasn’t hopeless. It was just dehydrated hair screaming for help.

Why Frizz Happens (And No, It’s Not Just “Bad Hair”)

Frizz isn’t a personality trait. It’s a symptom. Your hair’s cuticle layer opens up when it’s dry or damaged and starts grabbing water out of the air. You know that “poof” moment when you go from smooth to fluffy halfway through the day? That’s it reaching for moisture wherever it can find it.

And please don’t tell me you’re still using Suave or those old hotel shampoos. I see you. Those strip everything good right out of your hair. If your hair feels squeaky after washing, that’s not “clean.” That’s dry, thirsty hair ready to rebel.

Here’s What Actually Helps

First, stop over-washing. Two or three times a week is plenty. When you wash, stick with a gentle, sulfate-free shampoo. Focus it on your scalp, not your ends. If your roots get oily, dry shampoo is your backup. My favorite trick? A quick spritz before bed so it works overnight instead of in the morning rush.

Next, be gentle when drying. No towel rubbing. Grab an old soft T-shirt and just squeeze the water out. It feels weird the first time, but you’ll see the difference by day two. Way smoother ends. Way less frizz.

Hydration is everything. If your hair’s been snapping or puffing up lately, grab a leave-in or a little oil after every wash. I love products with argan or coconut oil. Start mid-length and work down. Don’t dump it on your roots unless you want to look like you skipped a shower. And if nothing’s helping, come in for one of our deep treatments. We’ll match it to your hair type so it actually works long term, not just for the day.

Also, please protect your hair from heat. I know the flat iron feels like your safety net, but if it’s set over 400, you’re literally cooking your hair. Keep it around 325 to 350. And yes, that heat protectant spray matters. I can always tell who’s using it and who’s “forgetting.”

And one last thing people don’t think about: your pillowcase. Cotton ones suck the moisture out overnight. Switch to silk or satin. It feels fancy but it’s cheaper than a repair treatment later. Plus, your blowouts last way longer.

The Real Secret: Regular Trims

I can always tell who’s overdue for a cut the second I touch their ends. Split ends are like tiny sponges. They grab humidity and puff out like crazy. Even taking off half an inch makes your hair smoother. Don’t skip trims thinking you’re “growing it out.” You’ll just end up cutting off more later because it breaks higher up.

Some Products I Actually Like

I don’t push products unless they work. My station’s full of half-empty bottles from things that didn’t. But these three? They’ve earned their spot:

Moroccanoil Smoothing Lotion – smells amazing, tames frizz without feeling greasy.
Olaplex No.7 Oil – my go-to for shine on color-treated hair.
Redken Frizz Dismiss Rebel Tame – for humid days when even good hair gets moody.

If you’re not sure what’s right for your hair, bring what you’re using next time. I’ll peek at the ingredients with you and tell you straight up if it’s worth keeping or tossing. No judgment, promise.

When It’s Time for a Salon Fix

If you’ve tried everything at home and it’s still puffing up, it might be time for a smoothing or conditioning treatment. At Rock Paper Scissors Chino, we tailor each one to your hair type so you’re not getting a cookie-cutter fix. I’ve had clients walk out literally petting their own hair after. We all do it. It’s fine.

Our team, me, Jenna, Mandy, Mikayla, Kinzie, Veronica, and Jillian, each have our little tricks for getting smooth, healthy hair that lasts longer than one wash. Whether it’s your first visit or you’ve been with us for years, we’ll help you figure out what your hair’s actually asking for.
